Mouse-proof Insulated Well Head Covers
Kennon Products of Sheridan, Wyoming, designs and manufactures covers to protect military aircraft form the sun, heat, and blowing sand. In fact, practically every aircraft deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan is equipped with one of Kennons products. Kennon is accustomed to probing for and solving problems.
So, when Marathon Oil asked Kennon to design an insulated wellhead cover for its coal bed methane wells, Kennon asked what, if anything, did they dislike about the covers they were currently using. The response was mice nests! Mice chewed through the covers and nested close to the heat tape. Worse yet, rattlesnakes followed the mice!
Kennon engineers constructed pouches out of various materials and filled them with peanut butter cups. Then, placed them in a hay field. It was through this a “field experiment” that a material was found that mice could not chew. Kennon designed covers to fit the wellhead. The covers have been installed for a year and they are performing as planned.
Often fiberglass huts are used in to cover wellheads. They provide a warm dark place that is attractive to snakes and skunks, and workers are often surprised by them when they open the door or lift the cover.
The Bureau of Land Management wants drillers to decrease their visual profile in the field. Eagles are using fiber glass huts as perches form which to hunt prey and drawing the bird away from its natural nesting areas. Kennon is developing mouse-proof wellhead covers in colors that blend in with the terrain.
Kennon custom designs Mouse-Proof Insulated Covers for any configuration of gas, uranium or general waterline operation. The company claims its Mouse-proof Insulated Covers are safer and more environmentally friendly than alternatives. They cost a fraction of what a hut costs and install in minutes.
